4 Blocks From the Border Wall

Written by Eleanor Williamson (Border Trip 2024)

We have arrived!

Today was a long day of travel with most of us being up for eighteen hours but we are all thrilled and relieved to be here. After a four-hour plane ride and a four-hour drive through the beautiful Arizona desert, we arrived at La Iglesia Bautista Amistad to a home-cooked pasta dinner that was just what we needed. We got acquainted with our gracious hosts from the church and Frontera de Cristo and met some community members from First Presbyterian Church by sharing our hopes, expectations, and fears for the trip.

Then, to enjoy the nice evening we walked through Douglas to get some forgotten necessities and get better acquainted with our home for the next few days.

When we arrived at the church, the first thing many of us noticed was that if you stand in the street and look straight ahead, you can see the border wall as clear as day.

The border has seemed like such an untouchable entity during our semester of learning about it and all the daily challenges it presents for people. And yet there it was. Four blocks away. As clear as the sky above us, looking like nothing more than a fence.

Tomorrow we are going to explore more of what the border means to us and reflect on how it affects our lives. I have already learned so much and am looking forward to what we learn tomorrow!

Enjoy some of our photo highlights!
